Punk'd!

I had intended to write a little something about chat and SL etiquette.

See, here's my problem. For as much time as I spend on the computer, I tend to go away a LOT.. in fact, its rare for me to spend more than 20 or 30 minutes without wandering away from the computer for something or other. Usually, its more like 10 or 15. I'm not gone for long, but I do afk a lot. And even if I'm not afk, I usually have something going on in several other windows at the same time. In the past, this hasn't been much of a problem on chats or IM conversations, because all the text is still there when I get back. And its only that- text. But in Second Life, someone could come up and be talking to me while I'm otherwise occupied, and I'd completely miss it. Or, I might be having a conversation with someone and my afk-ness might take up their time when they could be going off and doing other things. The whole concept of literal 'face to face' chatting is still brand new to me.

So when I bumped into Chugabug over on Podcast Island a little bit ago, I felt kind of bad when I told her I had to run afk to heat up dinner. Its not a big deal to take a couple minutes to respond in text, but when you have an avatar standing there waiting for you, it just feels rude to keep them waiting. I hoped she didn't take offense or think I was blowing her off when I told her I had to go afk. As it turns out, she has quite the sense of humor. This is what I came back to, when I returned to the computer.

As far as I can tell, there were no canals anywhere near the bridge we had been standing on. How she got me off the bridge and at least a block or two away to a canal is impressive in itself. The cage was a nice touch. I'm still giggling over that.

And she always seemed so sweet! ;)

All you afk'ers out there.. Beware the Chugabug.

RL intrudes - we can't help that. But you should always tell the other person that you are going AFK.

I have a friend who unfortunately has a habit of going afk without warning me and it's really annoying to ask her a question and not get a response for 10 minutes and then "sorry I had to feed my cat". USE AFK MODE! That's what it's for!

You can also get some cute animations that trigger on you going afk - my favourite is the one where you curl up into a foetal position on the floor asleep. I've also seen one where she pulls out a gun and blows her brains out everytime she goes afk! Scared the whatsits out of me the first time and I still don't like it.

As far as putting you in the canal - I feel that AFK avatars are fair-game to play tricks on like putting them in fountains or the sea and so on. Anyone who goes asleep in Samarkand anywhere in public can expect to find the faeries have been busy!

Caging is another matter.

I consider that a very aggressive act and don't see the funny side of it at all. Anyone who cages me will be Abuse Reported!

Send me an IM inworld and I'll give you something you should be able to use to get out of the cage.

Oh, no- I think maybe you misunderstood the tone of my post. I wasn't complaining about getting caged by Chugabug at all! I know Chug, and she's really sweet. She's one of the very first people I met on SL, and she's been a lot of help. She did it to be silly, and I thought it was really funny. We were laughing about it on IM right after I got back to the computer. I didn't have any trouble getting out of the cage, either. I just teleported away. I thought it was great! She's a cool person. :)

I'm sorry if I gave the impression that I was upset or complaining about the practical joke, that wasn't my intention at all.

As for the afk thing, I do tell people if I'm mid-conversation with them. But that curled up animation sounds cute. :) I need to start looking for good animations and poses soon.

I have a sign inspired by Crap Mariner. Its a thought bubble that appears above your head that says "I'm busier than you".
